Moving Truck Rental Checklist

3–4 weeks before

Measure your biggest furniture and confirm your truck size
Reserve the truck (one-way books out fastest, so lock it in early)
Compare one-way prices across U-Haul, Penske, and Budget
Check whether your card or insurer already covers a rental truck
Line up help: friends or a loading service at both ends
Start collecting or ordering boxes and packing supplies

1–2 weeks before

Pack room by room, labeling every box with room + contents
Set aside a clearly marked "load last" essentials box
Confirm the pickup location, time, and after-hours policy
Reserve a furniture dolly, straps, and moving blankets
Arrange parking for the truck at both addresses
Take photos of electronics and valuables before packing

Moving day: pickup

Bring your driver's license and the card on the reservation
Walk around the truck and photograph any existing damage
Check the fuel level and note it (return it the same)
Test the lights, ramp, and roll-up door before leaving
Load heaviest items first, against the cab, and strap tie-downs
Fill gaps so nothing shifts; keep weight balanced side to side

Moving day: return

Refuel to the level you started at to avoid the fuel surcharge
Sweep out the cargo area
Photograph the empty, clean truck and the fuel gauge
Return on time. Late returns can trigger an extra day
Get a return receipt or confirmation email
