Gas Prices by State

Prices are the U.S. Energy Information Administration's weekly retail averages for the week ending September 7, 2026. EIA measures 9 states directly at this frequency: California, Colorado, Florida, Massachusetts, Minnesota, New York, Ohio, Texas and Washington for gasoline, and California alone for diesel. Those states show their reported price.

Every other state is estimated, not measured. We take the published price for that state's EIA region, back out the region's average fuel tax to get its underlying cost per gallon, then add that state's own tax (January 2026 rates). Taxes are the largest controllable difference between neighbouring states, so this tracks the real spread reasonably well.

We test it by holding out the states EIA does publish: predict each one as if it were unmeasured, then compare to the real number. That lands within about $0.07 a gallon on average, roughly a third better than simply using the regional average. Treat an estimated state as a good guide to the region and the tax burden, not as a quote for a specific pump.

We also track mid-year tax suspensions, which a January tax table would otherwise miss entirely. A suspended fuel tax can move a state's pump price by far more than the model's normal margin, so each one is applied with explicit start and end dates, cited to the state's own revenue department, and expires on its own. Any state currently under one is flagged in the table above.

Alaska and Hawaii are left off the map on purpose. Their pump prices are set by marine freight and isolated supply rather than by tax. Hawaii has some of the lowest fuel taxes in the country and some of the highest prices, so the model would be confidently wrong there.
